We understand that window film is a product that needs some explanation and some instruction and that most folks spend some timelearning about us and the product category in general before making a purchase. So, we thought it might be beneficial for newcomers to see what the favorite topics our web visitors spent time learning about in 2024.

The trend in home building has been to larger houses on smaller lots with more and larger windows. This affords three things homeowners seem to want: (1) more square footage, with (2) less outside area to maintain, and (3) as cited by the Freedonia Group, “there has been a trend in recent years for larger sized single-family homes featuring more windows to increase natural interior light.”
The unintended consequence of this trend is that homes are built close together with neighbors often having views directly into private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms. Window film can be a great solution for those who want to keep out prying eyes without blocking natural light.

Double pane windows became popular in the United States in the late 80s. They were created to make windows more energy efficient. Double pane windows are comprised of two panes of glass mounted in a frame with a spacer between them where inert gas is pumped it to act as an insulator.
When double pane windows first came on the market, the predominant window films available were dyed films or metallic films. Metallic films in general are double pane window safe, but not everyone likes the way they look – so dyed films were often used. Dyed films control solar energy by absorbing it and too much absorption can cause glass to break or the seals on the windows to blow.
So, for a time, conventional wisdom said you can’t put window film on double pane windows because they will break. As with all things, technology moved forward and we began to have films come on the market like ceramic that reflect more energy instead of absorbing it without the shiny metal look. With the advent of ceramic films, the broad issue of window film on double pane windows was solved. But the myth persists that you should never film a double pane window.
The reality is that since 1989, most windows sold in the United States are double pane windows. And millions of windows have window film installed on them every year. So, with the right low absorption film, rated for double pane windows, you can film double pane windows.

Like homes in general, the trend in front doors to add more glass. More glass in the door itself, and glass sidelights flanking the door. And here again, glass in front doors is great for letting natural light into a foyer or front entry.
But an unexpected drawback to the added glass, is a lack of privacy. Front doors most often face the road, so passersby have a front row seat to what is happening inside your home. So this is another prime space for window film.
