Our 4 Mil clear safety film kit is your solution for enhanced safety, protection, and peace of mind. Made from high-quality, multi-layered polyester material, this window film is durable and resilient, with good optical clarity. Turns regular glass into tempered glass.
In addition, this film is suitable for renovations where existing windows need to be retrofitted with safety glass. It is ANSI-compliant and meets the International Building Code’s (and most local building codes*) requirement for safety or tempered glass in stairwells and bathrooms (including Massachusetts) for window panes less than 9 square feet in size. Each safety film kit includes ONE SHEET of 30″ X 36″ 4 Mil clear safety film to fit one sash of most standard double-hung windows (film can be oriented either way). The film has pre-applied tabs for easy liner removal, a pressure adhesive that is tacky to the touch, detailed instructions for installation, and an ANSI-compliant sticker.

Honestly, we struggled a bit with the application when following the enclosed instructions and video. We were applying to a small bathroom window (to meet code because it is near a shower). The amount of excess to leave (one inch) was too much on such a small window, especially given the thickness of the 4 mil film, and caused a lot of struggle when trying to trim. The second half of the window went slightly better by not leaving as much excess. Overall, the results are less than ideal, but as long as it meets the building code requirement, it serves the purpose.

For smaller windows, reducing the excess film slightly (as you discovered) can indeed make trimming easier, and we’ll consider updating our instructions to reflect this tip. it was critical to wet the back side of the foil as well as the window. I missed that in the instructions at first. really worked.
